Financial Planning

Everything you need to plan your money yourself, in one place: a simple guide first, then Human Life Value Calculator and Finethic Financial Planning Tools, then ways to get your latest mutual fund details. Nothing you type here is saved on our servers.

1. Financial planning made simple

Financial planning means deciding, in writing, where your money comes from, where it should go, and what it should achieve for you and your family. It is not only for the rich. It simply answers four questions: Where am I today? Where do I want to reach? By when? What must I do every month to get there?

1
Know your position
List income, expenses, savings, investments and loans. Your net worth = everything you own minus everything you owe.
2
Set goals
Write each goal with an amount in today's money and a year: child's education, a home, retirement, a wedding, a holiday.
3
Protect first
Keep an emergency fund (about 6 months of expenses), adequate term life cover and health insurance before investing for goals.
4
Invest for goals
Match each goal to a suitable option by time horizon: short goals need safety, long goals can accept some market risk. See the Investment Universe.
5
Mind tax
Choose the tax regime that leaves you with more money, and use eligible deductions wisely.
6
Review yearly
Income, prices and goals change. Re-run the plan once a year or after a major life event.

Words explained

InflationPrices rise every year. Rs 1 lakh of expenses today may need far more in 20 years. The planner raises every goal by an inflation rate you can change.
Net worthEverything you own (savings, investments, property, gold) minus everything you owe (loans, card dues). It is your financial scorecard.
Emergency fundMoney kept safe and easy to withdraw, usually 6 months of expenses, for job loss, illness or sudden repairs.
LiquidityHow quickly an investment can be turned into cash without a big loss. A savings account is highly liquid; real estate is not.
CompoundingEarning returns on your earlier returns. The longer you stay invested, the faster money grows, which is why starting early matters.
Human Life Value (HLV)The present worth of the income your family would lose if you were not there to earn it. It guides how much term life cover you need.
Term insurancePure life cover for a fixed period at a low premium. It pays your family if you die during the term and has no maturity benefit.
Health insuranceCover for hospital bills. It protects your savings from medical costs. Check the sum insured, waiting periods and exclusions.
SIP and lumpsumSIP is a fixed amount invested every month. Lumpsum is a one-time investment of a larger amount.
CorpusThe total sum you need to build by a goal date, such as at retirement.
Mutual fund and NAVA mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it. NAV (Net Asset Value) is the price of one unit of a fund on a given day.
EPF, PPF and NPSLong-term, tax-linked retirement and savings schemes in India. EPF is through your employer, PPF is a government savings scheme, NPS is the National Pension System.
Asset allocation and riskSplitting money between equity, debt, gold and others. Higher expected returns usually come with bigger ups and downs. Take the risk-profile quiz on the Academy page if unsure.
DiversificationSpreading money across different investments so that one poor performer does not hurt your whole plan.
RebalancingAdjusting your investments once in a while to bring them back to your chosen mix.
Old and new tax regimesThe new regime has lower slab rates but few deductions. The old regime has higher rates but allows deductions such as 80C, 80D and home loan interest. The planner compares both for you.
EMI and debt burdenEMI is the fixed monthly loan repayment. A healthy plan keeps total EMIs a moderate share of income so that savings are not squeezed.
Real returnReturn after subtracting inflation. If an option earns 7% and inflation is 5%, your real return is only about 2%.

2. How to use the financial planning tools

Privacy: there is no login. Your details stay in your own browser and in the Excel file you download. We do not store them. Never enter passwords, OTPs, PINs, card, bank, PAN or Aadhaar numbers.

A. Human Life Value Calculator

  1. Type your name so the report is personalised.
  2. Choose a method: Income-based (your earnings over your remaining working years) or Needs-based (what your family would actually need: expenses, loans, goals, minus existing assets and cover).
  3. Fill in the fields. Keep the amounts in rupees, without commas.
  4. The result updates as you type. It shows the suggested cover and how it is built.
  5. Press the PDF button to save a coloured report. Compare the result with the cover you already hold, then see the insurance section of the Planner.

Save and come back later (important)

  1. On the My plan tab, download your Excel file and keep it safe on your device.
  2. Next time, open the planner, use the upload option and select that same file. Everything refills automatically.
  3. If you lose the file, the data is gone, because we deliberately store nothing about you.

C. Retirement Calculator

  1. Enter your age, the age you wish to retire and how long you want your money to last.
  2. Add your monthly spending today and what you already have saved for retirement.
  3. See the savings you will need, and the monthly amount that closes any gap. Press the PDF button for a coloured report.

D. Return Calculator (XIRR)

  1. Add one row for every cash flow of your investment (bond, FD, small savings scheme, mutual fund or life insurance policy): the date and the amount.
  2. For each row, choose whether it is at the beginning (money you put in) or the end (money you receive) of the period. Add as many rows as you need.
  3. See your annualised return (XIRR). Download the one-page coloured PDF report or the Excel file.
Good habits: use realistic figures, not hopes; add the goals that scare you, not only the pleasant ones; and re-run the plan every year.

3. Financial Planning Tools

Each tool opens on its own page, so it has plenty of room on any screen. Use your browser's back button to return here.

5. Convert your Mutual Fund CAS PDF into Excel

CAS files usually arrive as password-protected PDFs. This utility reads the PDF inside your own browser (the file is never uploaded anywhere) and gives you an Excel sheet. Then copy the rows you need into your saved planner Excel file and upload that file in the Financial Planner.

  1. Choose your CAS PDF.
  2. If it is protected, type the password you gave. It is used only on your device.
  3. Press Convert, then Download Excel.

Layouts differ between statements, so always check the converted figures against your original CAS before using them. Scanned (image-only) PDFs cannot be read.
