Financial Planning
Everything you need to plan your money yourself, in one place: a simple guide first, then Human Life Value Calculator and Finethic Financial Planning Tools, then ways to get your latest mutual fund details. Nothing you type here is saved on our servers.
1. Financial planning made simple
Financial planning means deciding, in writing, where your money comes from, where it should go, and what it should achieve for you and your family. It is not only for the rich. It simply answers four questions: Where am I today? Where do I want to reach? By when? What must I do every month to get there?
List income, expenses, savings, investments and loans. Your net worth = everything you own minus everything you owe.
Write each goal with an amount in today's money and a year: child's education, a home, retirement, a wedding, a holiday.
Keep an emergency fund (about 6 months of expenses), adequate term life cover and health insurance before investing for goals.
Match each goal to a suitable option by time horizon: short goals need safety, long goals can accept some market risk. See the Investment Universe.
Choose the tax regime that leaves you with more money, and use eligible deductions wisely.
Income, prices and goals change. Re-run the plan once a year or after a major life event.
Words explained
Inflation
Prices rise every year. Rs 1 lakh of expenses today may need far more in 20 years. The planner raises every goal by an inflation rate you can change.Net worth
Everything you own (savings, investments, property, gold) minus everything you owe (loans, card dues). It is your financial scorecard.Emergency fund
Money kept safe and easy to withdraw, usually 6 months of expenses, for job loss, illness or sudden repairs.Liquidity
How quickly an investment can be turned into cash without a big loss. A savings account is highly liquid; real estate is not.Compounding
Earning returns on your earlier returns. The longer you stay invested, the faster money grows, which is why starting early matters.Human Life Value (HLV)
The present worth of the income your family would lose if you were not there to earn it. It guides how much term life cover you need.Term insurance
Pure life cover for a fixed period at a low premium. It pays your family if you die during the term and has no maturity benefit.Health insurance
Cover for hospital bills. It protects your savings from medical costs. Check the sum insured, waiting periods and exclusions.SIP and lumpsum
SIP is a fixed amount invested every month. Lumpsum is a one-time investment of a larger amount.Corpus
The total sum you need to build by a goal date, such as at retirement.Mutual fund and NAV
A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it. NAV (Net Asset Value) is the price of one unit of a fund on a given day.EPF, PPF and NPS
Long-term, tax-linked retirement and savings schemes in India. EPF is through your employer, PPF is a government savings scheme, NPS is the National Pension System.Asset allocation and risk
Splitting money between equity, debt, gold and others. Higher expected returns usually come with bigger ups and downs. Take the risk-profile quiz on the Academy page if unsure.Diversification
Spreading money across different investments so that one poor performer does not hurt your whole plan.Rebalancing
Adjusting your investments once in a while to bring them back to your chosen mix.Old and new tax regimes
The new regime has lower slab rates but few deductions. The old regime has higher rates but allows deductions such as 80C, 80D and home loan interest. The planner compares both for you.EMI and debt burden
EMI is the fixed monthly loan repayment. A healthy plan keeps total EMIs a moderate share of income so that savings are not squeezed.Real return
Return after subtracting inflation. If an option earns 7% and inflation is 5%, your real return is only about 2%.2. How to use the financial planning tools

Save and come back later (important)
- On the My plan tab, download your Excel file and keep it safe on your device.

- If you lose the file, the data is gone, because we deliberately store nothing about you.
C. Retirement Calculator

- Add your monthly spending today and what you already have saved for retirement.
- See the savings you will need, and the monthly amount that closes any gap. Press the PDF button for a coloured report.
D. Return Calculator (XIRR)
- Add one row for every cash flow of your investment (bond, FD, small savings scheme, mutual fund or life insurance policy): the date and the amount.
- For each row, choose whether it is at the beginning (money you put in) or the end (money you receive) of the period. Add as many rows as you need.
- See your annualised return (XIRR). Download the one-page coloured PDF report or the Excel file.
3. Financial Planning Tools
Each tool opens on its own page, so it has plenty of room on any screen. Use your browser's back button to return here.
4. Get the latest valuation of your mutual funds
Your Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) shows your current holdings across all mutual funds. You can get it electronically (e-CAS) through a mail-back service: investors who have registered their email address with mutual funds receive a soft copy of the e-CAS showing current holdings across all funds at that registered email.
AMFI: request your e-CAS by emailhttps://www.amfiindia.com/online-center/download-casYou can also view and download your mutual fund portfolio and CAS on the MFCentral portal.

5. Convert your Mutual Fund CAS PDF into Excel
CAS files usually arrive as password-protected PDFs. This utility reads the PDF inside your own browser (the file is never uploaded anywhere) and gives you an Excel sheet. Then copy the rows you need into your saved planner Excel file and upload that file in the Financial Planner.
- Choose your CAS PDF.
- If it is protected, type the password you gave. It is used only on your device.
- Press Convert, then Download Excel.
